- The Phelp-Stokes Fund Black U.S. Ambassadors Oral History project consists of ten interviews with Black United States ambassadors to African and Caribbean nations, who are also referred to as Chiefs of Mission, including Mabel Smythe, Franklin Williams, Mercer Cook, Samuel Adams, Charles J. Nelson, Elliot P. Skinner, John H. Morrow, Edward R. Dudley, and William Beverly Carter.

- The Phelps Stokes Fund is a philanthropic nonprofit established in 1911 by Caroline Phelps Stokes, an heiress and prominent philanthropist, in her will. The fund has supported charitable work in social and economic development, largely in Black and Indigenous communities. This series of interviews was sponsored by the Phelps Stokes Fund as part of an oral history project on Black Chiefs of Mission in the United States Foreign Service.
