Summary
Describes the religious experience of humankind, both in history and in the present. The books surveys the religions of the East, from Indian to Japan, and of the West, from the Middle East to North America. It also delineates the religious cultures of the South, in Africa, the Pacific and South America. It brings the story up-to-date, including the spiritual aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Readers and encouraged to adopt an attitude of informed empathy in order to get the feel of the various faiths and cultures. Though there is some emphasis on religious experience, there is also a call to look at other dimensions of religion, such as their teachings, rituals and other practices.
