Summary
  • This volume is an illustrated biography of English author, illustrator, and natural scientist Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). Potter is best known for her imaginative children's books featuring animals such as those in "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" which celebrated the British landscape and country life. Through original sketches, watercolors, and family photographs the author takes the reader through the course of her life, from her Victorian childhood in London to her final years farming in the Lake District area of northwest England also examining how Potter began creating children's books, and describing the influences on her work.
  • "In the ten years since the first publication of this book a wealth of Beatrix Potter memorabilia, including letters, photographs and a diary fragment, has been unearthed from attics and safes and has passed through the sale rooms. The publication in 1989 of Beatrix Potter's Letters, my selection of some 400 of her letters from a collection of over 1,400, brought to light yet more correspondence, as did the publication in 1992 of Letters to Children from Beatrix Potter. Access to most of the 'new' matter has enabled me to include in this revised edition previously unpublished photographs and a certain amount of fresh material."--P. [8].
