Summary
This unique diary combines the writings from two men from opposite sides of the American Civil War. The diary was originally that of Isaac B. Appleton, a Union soldier from Highland Park, Lake County, Illinois, and a member of the 22nd Wisconsin Volunteers. Appleton was killed, wounded, or simply lost the diary around Brentwood, Tennessee about January 31, 1863. Dyer came into the possession of the diary and made all the entries after that date. He is listed at Forrest's surrender in 1865, but the diary abruptly ends August 11, 1864. Dyer's portion of the diary was kept as he rode as a member of General Nathan Bedford Forrest's 'escort' or bodyguard through Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. It gives an insight into escort duty as he describes events with unique perspective. Dyer experienced war on the front lines and his portion of the diary details the terror, boredom, illness, and humor that goes hand in hand with war.
