Summary
Chs. 1-2 (pp. 15-56) discuss Pope Pius XII's attitude toward the persecution of the Jews in Rome by the Nazis during 1943-44. His policy at that time (which did not thwart the deportation of more than 1,000 Roman Jews in October 1943) was consistent with his stance during the war, and during the Holocaust in general, which consisted of avoiding provocations, maintaining neutrality, and refraining from public declarations, protests, or denouncements against the Nazis. This policy was aimed at "preventing things from becoming worse". On the other hand, the Pope ordered, in Italy and in other states, that Jews be saved by sheltering them in monasteries, churches, Catholic schools or Vatican facilities, and sometimes by intervention of high functionaries of the Church. Chs. 3-6 (pp. 57-224) trace his life and career from the time when he was the papal nuncio to Germany (1917-1929) through his papacy (1939-1958). Describes various events and complexities in the relations of the Catholic Church with Nazi Germany, and the results of the Pope's policies. Contends that he cannot say whether Pius XII should have chosen the path of openly opposing the Nazis, and whether that path would have been more advantageous for the Jews and Christians living under Nazi tyranny.
