Google Books at NYPL
NYPL is working with Google to offer a portion of its collection online via Google Book Search. The items being digitized in this project are chosen based on the following criteria: they are in the public domain (published before 1923) and they are in good enough physical condition to withstand scanning. The items are being scanned in their entirety and will be available to the public for free.

Starting September 10, 2007, NYPL is offering access via The Catalog to the digital copies of its collections scanned by Google. You may search for an item in The Catalog and if a digital copy is available, you may link to the copy that is part of Google Book Search. Scans of books will be made available first; periodicals and journals scanned by Google will be linked in Catalog records in a few months. It is NYPL's intention to eventually provide direct access to copies of the digital files we receive from Google. About NYPL's Partnership with Google
On December 14, 2004, Paul LeClerc, President of The New York Public Library (NYPL), announced that NYPL is partnering with Google in a program to make a subset of its books available in full text on the web. (See full press release: http://www.nypl.org/press/2004/google.cfm) This collaboration is expanding the accessibility of the Library's collections and supporting its mission to provide the public with free and unlimited access to information and knowledge resources.

In 2004, The New York Public Library was one of several libraries taking part in this ground-breaking digital venture with Google; others included the libraries at Michigan, Stanford, Harvard, and Oxford Universities. Since 2004, other libraries and institutions have signed partnership agreements including Princeton University, Cornell University, the University of California system, and the Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC).
