What's Not In the Online Catalog?
Some of The Research Libraries' holdings are still found only in the retrospective catalogs of the various subject and language divisions of The Research Libraries.

NYPL continues to add records to The Catalog that were previously found only in the book catalogs of the various Research Libraries, or as printed cards. It is advisable to search the appropriate book catalog if no record is found in the online Catalog, particularly for works published before 1972. For assistance, please ask a librarian.

The Catalog includes more than 8 million records: over 6 million records for titles cataloged since 1972 and over 2 million records for titles cataloged prior to 1972.

The records represent collections acquired from around the world in more than 370 languages or dialects, and in a variety of formats including:
  • Printed materials
  • Music scores and sheet music
  • Microforms
  • Archival and manuscript materials
  • Musical and non-musical sound recordings
  • Video and film
  • Photographs
  • Prints
  • Cartographic materials
  • Software and databases
  • Slides
  • Realia
