- "Its principal use might be said to be in the manufacture of wood-pulp for paper, and for this it is of highest value, being considered, perhaps, second to none in importance" (Populus grandidentata, large-toothed aspen): pt. 1, p. 67. Numerous other references to the use of trees in papermaking.

- Each case contains a booklet of descriptive text and at least 25 plates. Each entry in the text includes description, habitat, physical properties, uses and medicinal properties of the tree. Each plate (printed in gold on black paper over cardboard, with cutouts for the samples) includes the name of the tree in Latin, English, French, German and Spanish, and mounted transverse, radial and tangential sections of the wood.
