  • Disc 1 (ca. 49 min.). Stanislaus Idzikowski speaks with John Gruen, in most cases briefly, about his early training and career in Warsaw, Poland; finding his way to London, England where he danced with Phyllis Bedells at the Empire Theatre and with Anna Pavlova's company; joining Serge Diaghilev's Ballets russes in Lausanne at the invitation of Serge Grigoriev [Sergeĭ Leonidovich Grigorʹev]; Diaghilev; taking class with [Enrico] Cecchetti; some of his roles; touring in the U.S. in 1916; [Lydia] Lopoukhova; dancing Le spectre de la rose with Vera Trefilova in Paris to great acclaim; Tamara Karsavina; dancing in Coppelia; [in response to Gruen's question] describes his own dancing; more on the Ballets russes; more on Diaghilev; [Waslaw] Nijinsky; his wife Romola [de Pulszky] Nijinsky; [Leonide] Massine; more about Nijinsky; leaving the Ballets russes to create his own company; his first teacher, Gillert.

  • Disc 3 (ca. 65 min.). Stanislaus Idzikowski and John Gruen continue to look at and discuss Idzikowski's various crafts and memorabilia including a miniature theatre he made showing him in various roles, in accurate costume, as well as his books and photographs.

  • Interview with Stanislas Idzikowski conducted by John Gruen on Aug. 2, 1974 at Idzikowski's home in London, England, for the Oral History Project of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. In the first part of the recording Idzikowski speaks with Gruen, in most cases briefly, about various topics relating to his career as a dancer with the Ballets russes and other companies; in the latter part of the recording Idzikowski and Gruen look at and talk about the various objects (e.g., miniature rooms) he has created as well as his extensive collection of memorabilia, books, and photographs.
  • Open as of 1977.
  • Sound quality is good overall in the interview part of the recording (disc 1 and disc 2 , track 1 - ca. 1:30 min. into track 7). In the latter part, sound quality is fair; at times the speakers' voices are not always intelligible. Also, there is an extraneous hiss due to distortion in the original recording as well as occasional gaps.
