Robert Lindgren speaks with Linda Small about his responsibilities as dean of the North Carolina of the School of the Arts [name changed to University of North Carolina School of Arts in 2008] in Winston-Salem, and its affiliated theater, the North Carolina Dance Theater; the circumstances of how he came to be the founding dean of the school; his impressions of Winston-Salem as a community including its very significant corporate support for the arts; his background and early dance training; dancing for Leonide Massine and René Blum's company [Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo]; joining Ballet Theatre [later American Ballet Theatre]; dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (from 1945 - 1952); leaving, to dance in the television program Your show of shows; his marriage, to Sonja Taanila [Sonja Tyven]; dancing in muscial comedies in New York including On your toes; his return to ballet including two years with New York City Ballet; his wife and daughters; staying current with developments in the dance world; the changes in the dance world over the past forty years including the great expansion of opportunities for dancers [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
