Celia Franca speaks with John Gruen about her family background and early training at the Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Academy of Dancing [then the Association of Operatic Dancing of Great Britain] including her more memorable teachers; an anecdote about her audition for a scholarship; her year at the King Alfred School; the musical revue Spread it abroad, including an anecdote about her audition; studying at Marie Rambert's school [the Rambert School] including classes with Antony Tudor; Mim [Marie Rambert]; the atmosphere at the school; Ballet Rambert and performing in Tudor's ballets while she was still a student; her memories of Agnes de Mille; Tudor's Dark elegies including her small contribution to the choreography; Tudor's Lilac garden [Jardin aux lilas] including how he directed the dancers; taking lessons with Stanislas Idzikowski including how much she learned [ends abruptly but continues directly on disc 2].

Celia Franca continues to speak with John Gruen about Stanislas Idzikowski including his beautiful pirouettes; performing during World War II in London including her time at The Three Arts Ballet at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith and her ballet Midas; joining the International Ballet [Company] and leaving after nine weeks; joining the Sadler's Wells Company; an anecdote illustrating Ninette de Valois's courage and stoicism during the war; her roles at Sadler's Wells Ballet; Frederick Ashton's and De Valois's recognition of her musical ability; more on De Valois's personality; briefly, Ashton; roles she danced in his ballets; her choreography for Sadler's Wells Ballet; the audiences; briefly, her marriage; her experience with the Jooss [European] Ballet; joining the Metropolitan Ballet where she was also ballet mistress; choreographing for television; leaving Sadler's Wells Ballet when the company moved to Covent Garden; her role in helping to found the National Ballet of Canada.
