Summary
  • Primarily portraiture and social documentary photography, depicting smoking or other images related to tobacco. Portraits include actresses Belle Archer and "Troja" given as premiums for Newsboy Plug Tobacco by the National Tobacco Works. Other portraits include: unidentified 19th-century men smoking pipes or cigars; unidentified Asian-American, possibly an artist; Colombian woman smoking a cigar; Bob Dylan; Sue Hoffman, later known as Viva; "Laura Mae" from Judy Dater's Ten photographs series; Wallace Putnam with pipe; Louis Tihanyi and others. Images with identified persons include the Beatles playing with a ouija board; Peggy Lee backstage; photographs made during the filming of Pull my daisy, including Jack Kerouac and Dody Müller, and Alfred Leslie, Robert Frank and Gert Berliner.
  • Social documentary photos include images from Bruce Davidson's Brooklyn Gang series; 19th-century images of a Burmese man and a Burmese woman; two images from Wingogrand's Women are beautiful; images documenting Grapevine, W. Va.; Robert and Edwin Grabhorn examining sheet just printed at their press; family on the steps of the Ritz Bar; a 17-year old mill worker; woman in Times Square with umbrella, brightly lit ad for Camel cigarettes in the background; man with cigar standing in front of business that advertises "Dance with beautiful girls"; a street scene, identified as Cuba, but probably Florida, showing a cigar manufacturer, and others.
