Mr. Kelly disucusses his family background; early interest in art; exposure to music through the church; early feelings relating to sexuality; the place of the artist in society; James Waring; getting scholarships at the American Ballet Theatre school and Harkness House; leaving dance and going to art school; developing an interest in club performances; the invention of his female alter ego, Dagmar Onassis; working with the Trockadero Gloxinia Ballet Company; performing at P.S. 122 and Danspace Project; the role of dance in his pieces; abstract versus dramatic movement; Pina Bausch; drag; conflicts with presenters; voice training; financial problems; Huck Synder; the creative process; and the role Barbette [from his Light shall lift them].
