  • Cassette 1. Recorded November 10, 1996. Ms. Hering discusses her family background; her first exposure to and interest in dance; her interest in language; first dance classes; early experiences of art; the influence of her piano teacher Beatrice Maltman Flitcroft; becoming interested in writing; renewing her interest in dance after college; her first jobs after college; studying with Sophie Maslow and Jane Dudley at the New Dance Group; writing for Dance Magazine; becoming a freelance writer; and the economic necessity of returning to full-time work.
  • Cassette 2. Recorded November 14, 1996. Ms. Hering describes attending the writers conference in Colorado in the 1950's and discovering the relationship between poetry and criticism; her work at Dance Magazine; Lydia Joel; issues relating to criticism including ethics; her developing interest in the growth of ballet in areas outside New York City; the first Regional Ballet Festival; meeting Dorothy Alexander; working with Ms. Alexander in regional ballet; work as an adjudicator for the Regional Ballet Festival; and the projects and history of the National Association for Regional Ballet including her own role in it.
  • Cassette 3. Recorded November 14, 1996. Ms. Hering continues discussing the National Association for Regional Ballet and how the organization changed over time; describes changes within the regional ballet companies; the current general economic situation in the arts; and her return to writing. Interviewer plays a free-association game with Ms. Hering, asking general questions or naming people, places, or ideas hoping to elicit an interesting response.
