Biography
Playwright, actor, director and producer, Garland Lee Thompson was born in Muskogee, OK, in 1938. Thompson lived in Los Angeles during the 1960s, where he was associated with the Actors Studio/West. He appeared in the film "South Pacific" and in a stage production of Langston Hughes's "Simply heavenly." Thompson wrote several plays for adults and children, produced a short film, and "Sisyphus and the blue-eyed cyclops" was produced by the Actors Studio/West. In 1971, he came to New York City, as associate director of the national tour and production stage manager for the Broadway production of Charles Gordone's "No place to be somebody." His "Papa Bee on the D train" was selected for presentation at the Third Annual Black Theater Alliance Festival at the Billie Holiday Theater, 1972.
Garland Lee Thompson is the founding director of Frank Silvera Writers Workshop, 1973 to present. He is also the founding board member and treasurer of the Black Theater Alliance, NY. He is the winner of the AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Board of Directors Award for superior and sustained contribution to community theater, 1976. He is also winner of an AUDELCO Award, as producer of Ed Shockley's "Bessie Smith, empress of the blues," 1981.
