Biography
Playwright, director, and teacher, Gray was born in New York City. Rudy Gray received the B.A. from City College of New York, 1945, and the M.A. from Hunter College. He taught English, produced and directed full-scale student productions, including "The student prince," "Finian's rainbow," and "Inherit the wind." His plays have been produced in New York by the American Community Theater, the Hunter College Playwrights Unit, the New Lafayette Theater, and the Company in Black, of which he is the director. His memberships include, among others, Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, Frank Silvera Writers Workshop. Rudy Gray is the recipient of the following awards: three John Golden playwriting awards, 1972-1974; Writers Guild of America Screenwriting Fellowship, 1980; Creative Artists Public Service Playwriting Fellowship, 1980; the American Award for Filmmaking; nominee for an AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Award for excellence in black theater.
