Summary
  • Cassette 1, (10-29-98): Mr. Martins discusses George Balanchine's invitation to assume the leadership of the New York City Ballet, the years leading up to Balanchine's death, and the ways in which Martins and Balanchine prepared for this transition. Martins remembers his reaction upon hearing of Balanchine's death. Martins also discusses his appointment as co-director of the company, joining Jerome Robbins.
  • Cassette 2, (12-29-98): Mr. Martins discusses taking over the company's finances; the ownership of Balanchine's ballets; the relationship of the company and himself to the George Balanchine Trust. He describes the American Music Festival, the Diamond Project, the Robbins festival, and the Balanchine festival. Martins shares his thoughts on the School of American Ballet; choosing dancers for the company; and his desire for continuity in the company. He reflects on his friendship with Lincoln Kirstein, his professional relationship with Robbins, and Robbins' death. Martins describes his sense of responsibility toward both the ballets and the company; tells of Balanchine's legacy of profound commitment; then shares thoughts on his leadership, his hopes for the future of the company, the importance of educating audiences, and the priorities of the next century. Martins concludes with additional discussion of his mission and responsibilities as the New York City Ballet's Ballet Master-in-Chief.
