Note
  • Imprint from title page, where publisher statement precedes place of publication.
  • Previously published by Blado in a variant edition without imprint on title page; some copies of this edition have a colophon with Blado's imprint, and of these some also have the date "Anno D[omi]ni 1558." See De Bujanda, J.M. Index de Rome, 1557, 1559, 1564, ©1990, pages 711-712 and facsimiles, pages 788-792.
  • Another Blado edition published in January 1559 is in 12mo ([88] pages); see De Bujanda, page 713 and facsimiles, page 793.
  • Some copies, presumably of a later issue, include on recto of final leaf (page [71]) a paragraph printed perpendicularly, beginning "De libris orthodoxorum patrum ...," permitting ownership, under some circumstances, of properly expurgated editions of Church Fathers and others whose works had been edited or translated by authors prohibited by the Index. This is excerpted from "Instructio circa Indicem librorum prohibitorum," published in February 1559, and is a different document from the Inquisitor General's decree "Moderatio Indicis librorum prohibitorum," issued on June 14/24, 1561, further modifying the terms of the Index, with which it has been confused by Reusch and others. For discussion, see Reusch, F.H. Index der verbotenen Bücher, 1883-1885, v. 1, pages 259-260, 299; De Bujanda, pages 46-50, 100-106 (text and facsimile of the Instructio and text of the Moderatio), 712-713, 752-787 (facsimile of copy of the Index with final paragraph).
  • NYPL copy: With the paragraph beginning "De libris orthodoxorum patrum ..." on final leaf.
  • "Tenor prohibitionis ex decreto S. Ro. et Vniuersalis Inquisitionis": pages [2-3]. Dated on page [3]: "Die xxx Decembris M.D.LIX [erroneous for M.D.LVIII] praefatae literae affixe & publicatae furerunt ..."
  • Text of the Index ends on leaf I3r (page [69]) with a paragraph beginning "Libri, tractatus et opera omnia, cuiuscunque auctoris, artis, idiomatis, et argumenti sint ..."
  • Signatures: A-I⁴. $2 signed, roman. Quire catchwords. Leaf I3v blank; leaf I4 blank or with a perpendicularly printed paragraph on recto; see note above.
  • Title within ornamental architectural woodcut border; imprint beneath border. A circular space within the lower border is found in at least three states: blank (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and Biblioteca Casanatense copies); with ecclesiastical armorial ornament (achievement of a cardinal, with the Ghislieri arms (the grand inquisitor Cardinal Michele Ghislieri, afterwards Pope Pius V) and in chief the Carafa arms (Pope Paul IV)) (Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Firenze copy); and with letterpress "Sedente Paulo IIII" (NYPL copy). Text within double-rule borders. Historiated initials.
