- Description
- 26 sound tape reels : analog, stereo.; 7 in.
- Summary
- Collection consists of recorded "master lessons" given by New York piano teacher Karel Pachta to various students. According to the letter written by Pachta to accompany the original gift, the collection "includes, besides some titles of the concert literature, many titles of the student's literature, which are much more likely to be used and played by the huge majority of students, serving thus those who are more numerous and need more help, rather than those few ones who deserve and can afford personal lessons of high standard." Pachta gives the students advice on the performance of works including those of Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bartok, Poulenc, Clementi, Schubert, Tcherepnin, Kabalevsky, Shostakovich, Brahms, Liszt, Scriabin, Scarlatti, Villoldo, Rubenstein, and Schumann. Beethoven's Sonata no. 5 in C min. op. 10 no. 1 and Schumann's Kinderszenen, op. 15 are given the most attention, with 6 tapes relating to each.

- Biography
- Karel Pachta was born in Paris, France, in 1927. He moved to Argentina after World War 2, and studied with Dr. Zbignew Neuhoff, a Doctor of Musicology of Polish decent who had taught in Germany, but had also moved to Argentina after the War. Neuhoff urged Pachta to take up piano pedagogy, having discerned a "born teacher" in him. Pachta moved to New York in 1964, and had much success there teaching students of all levels and abilities. Pachta was a member of the American Musicological Society, and of the Czechoslovak Society for Arts and Sciences in America.
