Description
1 videocassette (119 min.) : sd., b&w.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Chet Baker, a jazz beacon with a "heart-breaking trumpet," a "heart-broken voice," and "doomed youth" good looks, lived and died like a Kerouac creation. Weber's candid interviews with the ravaged 58-year-old musician were undertaken during a journey across America and Europe. These encounters form the basis of a "visceral" composite representing the various stages of Baker's troubled life. It includes early glimpses of Baker as a handsome young jazz trumpeter in the mid-50's; footage of a still-handsome Baker in the 60's with excerpts from his Italian B-movie appearances and the musician's painful decline due to an increasing drug habit. Weber's biographical portrait is complemented by rare performance footage and the often hilarious testimony of friends, fellow musicians and bickering ex-wives. Soon after the film's completion, Baker died from a fall out of an Amsterdam hotel window.
