Summary
Set in Martinique in 1931, this film established 28-year-old Palcy as a major filmmaking talent. Mixing fiction with documentary styles, her film paints a rich portrait of life under French colonial rule. The conditions of black plantation workers are presented from the perspective of a quiet, perceptive 11-year-old orphan who lives with his grandmother. The film charts his rise from shantytown to brilliant student and writer. (Circulates)
