Karin von Aroldingen speaks with Ellen Sorrin about her training and early dance career in Germany; performing with the Hamburg Ballet in George Balanchine's The seven deadly sins with Lotte Lenya; her introduction by Lenya to Balanchine; the difficult first years of transition to dancing in the New York City Ballet; Balanchine's teaching; his working methods with dancers; performance and the transformative power of costume; the camaraderie within New York City Ballet and her rapport with Kay Mazzo; the importance of Balanchine's work Stravinsky violin concerto in her career.
