Biography (note)
  • The AM2 collection was assembled by Elliott Shapiro, nephew of Louis Bernstein. Together with his uncle (as Shapiro, Bernstein Inc.) they were one of the major publishers of American popular sheet music in the mid-20th century. With Harry Dichter, he authored "Early American sheet music: it's lure and lore (1941, reprinted and retitled "Handbook of early American sheet music, 1768-1889"), based (in part) on this collection. Elliott Shapiro died February 2, 1956. Upon receipt, the collection was merged with the Music Division's existing collection of sheet music.
